You'll have to excuse me -- today's entry is mostly links and descriptions rather than personal thoughts. I hope you'll find them useful.

I accidentally stumbled onto the website of the Institute for Educational Leadership, an interesting organization designed to bring together people and funding to help improve schools.

They have a number of projects, including the Coalition for Community Schools encourages communities to turn their schools into community centers. Places where students and non-students go to enjoy themselves while contributing to the school at the same time.

Their National Clearinghouse for Comprehensive School Reform is full of information on various ways to implement school reform. Some of their example suggestions include strong emphasis on tutoring, innovative teaching methods, games, simulations, teaching "gifted" programs to "disadvantaged" students, outdoor expeditions and more. (See Schoolwide Reform Models: What Works? for more information.)

It's good to see that there are organizations out there working on this issue, even if they don't go quite far enough.
