I just saw a Nightline episode on enemy combatants. The US is claiming that US citizens on US soil like Jose Padilla are “enemy combatants” and thus should be locked up in jail with no hearing, no chance to verify any of the government’s claims and no recourse. If they’re allowed to do this, what stops them from locking up anyone they disagree with? Hey, why not lock up anyone who dares to run against Bush in the next election? Maybe they’ll lock up me for speaking out.

Worse, what can we do about this? According to this Washington Post article there is a judge ruling on the case but it’s not clear how or why.
