BayArea.com: Santa Cruz council invites marijuana users to distribute pot at City Hall. Summary: In response to high-profile raids by the DEA of NoCal marijuana growers, Santa Cruz city leaders will be handing out medical marijuana at City Hall. Doing so is legal under Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Nevada, Oregon and Washington state law, but not federal law.

Vice mayor on the DEA bust: “It’s just absolutely loathsome to me that federal money, energy and staff time would be used to harass people like this.”

DEA Spokesman on the giveaway: “Are you serious? That’s illegal. It’s like they’re flouting federal law. I’m shocked that city leaders would promote the use of marijuana that way. What is that saying to our youth?”

That they should protect their freedoms, perhaps? Rock on, Santa Cruz! We visited Santa Cruz rather often when my Dad went on business trips there. It’s a city of surfers and students, with a small amusement park. It’s a wonderful place.
